The 2020 football season has kicked off with a premier victory for Junior against La Equidad, at Metropolitano, 2-0 with goals from strikers Gutiérrez and Borja.
Coach Julio Comesaña chose no less than five of his new players to hit the field from the outset with Fabián Viáfara, Danny Rosero, Jeison Angulo, Larry Vásquez and star striker Miguel Ángel Borja, all taking their place in the lineup along with key players like goal-keeper and captain Sebastian Viera and Teo Gutiérrez.
It was a nice atmosphere at the Metropolitano with fans coming to the “la casa de Junior” with their hopes of a premier victory for Junior when the 2020 campaign started. And we could see quite early this was a match where the runner-ups from last season would have a great chance to leave with all three points.
Star striker Miguel Ángel Borja who joined the team in January from Brazilian giants Palmeiras showed everyone right away that he’s here to make the impact the fans were hoping for. He had two good chances to score before the first goal came. When it did, he took the ball from Equidad defenders and charged like a bull towards the goal and made no mistake, smashing the ball into the net, 1-0 and the fans went wild, screaming with joy from the stands.
Local favorite Teo Gutiérrez, the kid from the block, born and raised in la Chinita, also came very close with a back heel kick that would have been a really beautiful goal. Equidad was not completely harmless though; they did make a goal, but it was ruled out for an offside.
At the beginning of the second half goal-keeper, Viera saved what could have been the equalizer when an Equidad-player came at him, one-on-one. That would have put Junior in a more difficult position to secure the premier victory but Viera also saved it, in the end, keeping a clean sheet.
Another of the newly-signed players, Carmelo Valencia, was brought on with 4 minutes left to replace goal scorer Borja, and took just three minutes to show off his skills for his new fans. He won a duel and tore off towards the goal passing the ball to Teo who scored 2-0 and sealed the deal with his goal in the 89th minute. After that, it was nothing but joy for the fans knowing the premier victory for Junior had been secured.
According to the club’s official Twitter account, a total of 12,466 fans (including 7619 season ticket holders) came to see Junior’s premier victory. If they keep playing the way they did here, that number will surely rise. The next match in Liga Águila for Junior is on Tuesday when the team goes to Cali to play Deportivo de Cali.
